Despite citing the likes of Paul Robeson and Enrico Caruso as early influences and harbouring ambitions to become an opera singer, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was one of the earliest (if not the earliest) exponent of ‘shock rock’, assembling an outfit that included a cigarette-smoking skull called Henry, tusks worn through the nose and snakes and fireworks onstage. His demented singing style earned him the title of a rock and roll madman, a moniker Hawkins particularly revelled in both on and off stage - he is believed to have fathered as many as 75 children! A musical career of some 40 years produced many notable highlights, including 'Sweet Ginny', 'She Put The Wammee On Me' and 'I Hear Voices', all included on this album
