Josef Locke served in the Irish Guards from the age of sixteen (he lied about his age, adding two years in order to enlist) and the Palestinian Police before returning home to Ireland to serve in the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
It was here that his singing ambitions were rekindled, touring as the 'Singing Bobby' and becoming popular on both sides of the Irish Sea. He appeared regularly on radio from 1949 and was invited to perform at five Royal Command Performances, subsequently becoming an extremely popular television performer. Indeed, he was at the peak of his popularity when problems with the Inland Revenue hastened a rapid departure back to Ireland. Although he disappeared from public view for a considerable time, his popularity showed little sign of diminishing, each successive generation being enthralled by his singing voice
