Given the first name Alma because her mother was a fan of film star Alma Taylor, Alma Cogan first started singing seriously whilst still an art student, auditioning for Ted Heath but finding something of a benefactor in HMV Records' Walter Ridley. She made her professional debut singing at the Cumberland Hotel and made her first record soon after, but it was not until 'Bell Bottom Blues', a cover of Teresa Brewer's US hit that Alma first made the charts.
Alma would go on to become one of the top female singers from the mid 1950s onwards, topping the charts with 'Dreamboat' in 1955. She also made a sizeable name for herself as a songwriter, usually under the pseudonym of Al Western, and also recorded a series of duets with Frankie Vaughan and Ronnie Hilton.
At the time of her death from cancer in 1966 Alma was working on an album with Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham; following her untimely death these were scrapped.
