Al Martino’s 'Here In My Heart' had been Britain’s first number one when the singles chart had debuted in November 1952 and was still at the top of the charts by the time the New Year was rung in.
Al was finally dethroned on 16th January, and during the course of the following nine months or so fourteen titles would ascend to the top of the charts. The biggest winner of the year was Frankie Laine, who registered three number one hits, including 'I Believe' which spent a total of 18 weeks at the top during the course of three spells at number one.
We’ve also included the very first chart topper of 1954 on this album, on the grounds that it was already on the charts as Auld Lang Syne was being sung on December 31st 1953. Watch out for further releases in this historical collection
